Welcome Stranger by Joe Schneider

Between 1-18 October Joe Schneider will explore the streets of Southfields drawing the people he meets, noting down fragments of the conversations that he has with them and recording the spaces that he passes through. These drawings will gradually fill the Old Sweet Shop gallery day-by-day.

All participants will be invited to the exhibition as it evolves
and to the private view on the last day of the project when the drawings will be given away.

At the centre of this project is the desire to create a context to consider the idea of the stranger and the community. Through an accumulation of fragmentary works a rich and suggestive portrait of a locality will be created, a record of connections made and connections missed. It will open a space to consider the distance between people as much as the effort to bridge this distance.

Welcome Stranger is a community project that is founded
on generousity and openness but it is also a project that seeks to question any easy concepts of inclusion and community and do justice to the divisions and alienations of our everyday lives.

Joe Schneider (b.1973) lives and works in London.
He studied for his BA in Philosophy at the University of Sussex. He has shown extensively in England and Germany. Forthcoming projects include a 3-month residency in Sturovo, Slovakia where he will continue to develop
the Welcome Stranger project.
