My paintings are based on the remote landscape of Australia. Rather than depicting a direct representation of a place I have visited, I am interested in capturing the essence of my experience of that place.
The experience is a culmination of all senses, not only visual. I am creating a memory picture of what I have seen, smelt, touched and heard.
The images in my work evolve through a slow process of building up many thin layers of paint. Choosing to create my own colours with pure pigment powders, I then mix the powders with both acrylic and oil based mediums.
As the paint is poured on to the canvas, I mix it with other materials such as water, PVA and turpentine and through this process images and surfaces will gradually appear that represent my memory of the place I have visited.
